BLUE LAGOON, ICELAND
Located in a lava field between Keflavik International Airport and Reykjavik, The Blue Lagoon is a stop I highly recommend. The geothermal water originates 2,000 meters below the surface, where freshwater and seawater combine at extreme temperatures. The water picks up silica and minerals on the way to the surface where temperatures can reach 99-102°F.
The water is composed of three active ingredients – Silica, Algae & Minerals. The blue color comes from the silica and the way it reflects sunlight. However, if you scooped up a cup of this water you would see that it's actually white. It is the sunlight that creates the blue color that you see.
The Blue Lagoon also operates a research and development facility to help find cures for other skin ailments using the mineral-rich water. My skin felt so incredibly soft for a week after visiting the lagoon and I noticed a huge improvement in my skin overall.
Visiting the Blue Lagoon was the most relaxing and rejuvenating experience after 9+ hours of travel, making Iceland the perfect stop-over on the way to Europe. I barely scratched the surface of this country and am hungry to go back. There is so much to see.
